Pope's Address Before the Angelus (December 20, 2020)
Dear brothers and sisters, good afternoon! On this Fourth and final Sunday of Advent, the Gospel proposes to us once again the account of the Annunciation. “Rejoice,” says the angel to Mary, “you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus” (Lk 1:28, 31). It seems to be an announcement of pure joy, destined to make the Virgin happy. Among the women of that time, which woman did not dream of becoming the mother of the Messiah? But along with joy, those words foretell a great trial to Mary.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분 안녕하십니까? 대림 4 주일이자 대림 마지막 주일에 복음은 우리에게 다시 한 번 무염시태의 이야기를 들려줍니다. 천사가 마리아에게 말합니다. “은총이 가득한 이여, 기뻐하여라. 주님께서 너와 함께 계시다.” (루카 1,28,31) 그것은 마리아를 결국 행복하게 만들 순수한 기쁨의 선언 같습니다. 그 당시의 여성 가운데 어떤 여성이 메시아의 어머니가 되는 꿈을 꾸지 않았겠습니까? 그러나 기쁨과 나란히 이 말은 마리아에게 큰 시련을 예고합니다.
Why? Because in that moment she was “betrothed” (v. 27); she was unmarried. She was betrothed to Joseph. In such a situation, the Law of Moses stipulated there should be no relations or cohabitation. Therefore, in having a son, Mary would have transgressed the Law, and the punishment for women was terrible: stoning (see Dt 22:20-21). Certainly, the divine message would have filled Mary’s heart with light and strength; nevertheless, she found herself faced with a crucial decision: to say “yes” to God, risking everything, even her life, or to decline the invitation and to continue her ordinary life.
왜 그럴까요? 그 순간에 마리아는 “약혼” 상태였기 때문입니다. (27절) 그는 결혼하지 않았고 요셉과 약혼한 상태였습니다. 그런 상황에서 모세율법은 혼전 관계나 동거가 없어야 한다고 규정하고 있습니다. 그래서 임신함으로써 마리아는 규정을 위반한 것이 되고 그에 대한 처벌은 끔찍하였습니다. 돌을 던져 죽이는 것이었습니다. (신명기 22,20-21 참조) 분명 하느님의 메시지는 마리아의 가슴을 빛과 힘으로 채웠을 것입니다. 그러나 그는 자신이 중대한 결정에 직면하고 있음을 깨달았습니다. 모든 위험, 생명의 위험까지 감수하고 하느님께 “예”라고 말씀 드릴 것인가, 아니면 그 초대를 거절하고 자신의 평범한 삶을 계속할 것인가의 결정입니다.
What does she do? She responds thus: “Let it be to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38). But in the language in which the Gospel is written, it is not simply “let it be”. The expression indicates a strong desire, it indicates the will that something happen. In other words, Mary does not say: “If it has to happen, let it happen… if it cannot be otherwise…”. It is not resignation. No, she does not express a weak and submissive acceptance, but rather she expresses a strong desire, a vivacious desire. She is not passive, but active. She does not submit to God, she binds herself to God. She is a woman in love prepared to serve her Lord completely and immediately. She could have asked for a little time to think about it, or even for more explanations about what would happen; perhaps she could have set some conditions… Instead, she does not take time, she does not keep God waiting, she does not delay.

How often – let us think of ourselves now – how often is our life is made up of postponements, even the spiritual life! For example, I know it is good for me to pray, but today I do not have time… tomorrow… by saying “tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow”, we postpone things: I will do it tomorrow. I know it is important to help someone, yes, I must do it: I will do it tomorrow. Today, on the threshold of Christmas, Mary invites us not to postpone, but to say “yes”. “Must I pray!” “Yes, I will seek and pray”. “Must I help others? Yes”. How shall I do it? And I do it. Without putting it off. Every “yes” costs something, every “yes” has its cost, but it always costs less than what that courageous and prompt “yes” cost her, that “let it be to me according to your word”, which brought us salvation.
우리 자신을 생각해 봅시다. 우리의 삶에서, 영적 삶에서 조차 얼마나 자주 미루는 일이 일어나나요. 예를 들어서 내가 기도하는 것이 좋다는 것을 압니다. 그러나 오늘 나는 시간이 없습니다. 내일, “내일, 내일”하면서 우리는 할 일을 미룹니다. 내일 하지. 다른 사람을 도와주는 일이 중요하다는 것을 압니다. 그렇습니다. 내가 꼭 해야 합니다. 내일 하지요. 오늘 성탄의 문턱에서 마리아는 미루지 않고 “예”, “기도해야지.”라고 얘기하도록 우리를 초대합니다. “내가 다른 사람을 도와주어야 하나요? 예.” 제가 어떻게 그것을 할까요? 그리고 제가 그것을 합니다. 미루지 않고. 모든 “예”는 댓 가를 치릅니다. 모든 “예”가 그에 해당하는 댓 가가 있습니다. 그러나 그 댓 가는 항상 그 용기 있고 즉각적인 “예”가 마리아에게 안겨준 댓 가보다 크지 않습니다. 우리에게 구원을 갖다 준 그 “말씀하신 대로 저에게 이루어지기를 바랍니다.”
What, then is the “yes” we can say? Instead of complaining in these difficult times about what the pandemic prevents us from doing, let us do something for someone who has less: not the umpteenth gift for ourselves and our friends, but for a person in need whom no-one thinks of! And another piece of advice: in order for Jesus to be born in us, let us prepare our hearts, let us go to pray, let us not let ourselves be swept up by consumerism. “Ah, I have to buy presents, I must do this and that”. That frenzy of doing things, more and more. It is Jesus that is important. Consumerism is not found in the manger in Bethlehem: there is reality, poverty, love. Let us prepare our hearts to be like Mary’s: free from evil, welcoming, ready to receive God.
그러면 우리가 말할 수 있는 “예”는 무엇일까요? 요즈음의 어려운 시기에 전염병 대유행 때문에 못하는 일에 대해서 불평하기보다는 더 적게 가진 사람을 위해 무엇이든지 합시다. 우리 자신과 우리의 친구들을 위한 몇 번째인지도 모를 선물을 사기보다는 아무도 생각하지 않는 어려움에 처한 사람을 위한 일을 합시다. 또 다른 조언은, 우리 안에 예수님께서 태어나시게 하기 위해서 우리의 마음을 준비합시다. 가서 기도합시다. 우리 자신이 소비주의에 휩쓸리지 않게 합시다. “아, 선물을 사야 해. 이것도 하고 저것도 해야 해.” 쉴 새 없이 일을 하는 것이 점점 심해집니다. 중요한 분은 예수님이십니다. 베들레헴의 구유에 소비주의는 없습니다. 거기에는 실제, 가난, 사랑이 있습니다. 우리의 마음을 악이 없고, 환영하고, 하느님을 맞을 준비가 되어 있는 마리아의 마음처럼 되도록 준비합시다.
“Let it be to me according to your word”. This is the Virgin’s last word for this last Sunday of Advent, and it is the invitation to take a genuine step towards Christmas. For if the birth of Jesus does not touch our lives – mine, yours, yours, ours, everyone’s – if it does not touch our lives, it slips past us in vain. In the Angelus now, we too will say “let your word be fulfilled in me”: May Our Lady help us to say it with our lives, with our approach to these last days in which to prepare ourselves well for Christmas.
“말씀하신 대로 저에게 이루어지기를 바랍니다.” 이것이 오늘 마지막 대림주일에 한 동정녀의 마지막 말이며 성탄을 향해 진정한 발걸음을 떼라는 초대입니다. 예수님의 탄생이 우리의 삶을 감동시키지 않으면 - 나의 삶, 당신의 삶, 우리의 삶, 여러분의 삶, 모든 사람의 삶 - 성탄이 우리의 삶을 감동시키지 않으면 성탄은 우리를 헛되이 지나칠 것이기 때문입니다. 이제 삼종기도를 바치면서 우리도 “말씀하신 대로 저에게 이루어지기를 바랍니다.” 라고 말할 것입니다. 우리의 성모님 저희를 도우셔서 이 말씀을 우리의 삶으로 말하도록 하시고 이 마음으로 우리가 이 마지막 날들에 성탄을 잘 준비하게 하소서.
