Pope's Address Before the Angelus (January 17, 2021)

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Buongiorno! The Gospel for the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time (see Jn 1:35-42) presents the meeting between Jesus and His first disciples. The scene unfolds along the Jordan River the day after Jesus’s baptism. It is John the Baptist himself who points out the Messiah to the two with these words: “Behold, the Lamb of God!” (v. 36). And those two, trusting the Baptist’s testimony, follow Jesus. He realizes this and asks: “What are you looking for?”, and they ask Him: “Rabbi, where are you staying?” (v. 38).

친애하는 형제자매 여러분 안녕하십니까? 연중 제 2주일의 복음은 (요한 1,35-42) 예수님과 첫 제자들과의 만남을 전합니다. 그 장면은 예수님의 세례 다음 다음 날 요르단 강을 따라 펼쳐집니다. 두 제자들에게 다음과 같이 말하면서 예수님을 가리킨 사람은 세례자 요한 자신입니다. “보라, 하느님의 어린양이시다.” (36절) 그리고 세례자의 증언을 믿는 두 사람은 예수님을 따라 나섭니다. 이것을 알아차린 예수님께서 물으십니다. “무엇을 찾느냐?” 그러자 제자들이 여쭙니다. “라삐, 어디에 묵고 계십니까?” (38절)

Jesus does not respond: “I live in Capernaum, or in Nazareth”, but says: “Come and you will see” (v. 39). Not a calling card, but an invitation for an encounter. The two follow Him and remained that afternoon with Him. It is not difficult to imagine them seated asking Him questions and above all listening to Him, feeling their hearts enflamed ever more while the Master speaks. They sense the beauty of the words that respond to their greatest hope. And all of a sudden they discover that, even though it is evening, in their hearts, that light that only God can give was exploding within them. One thing that catches our attention: sixty years later, or maybe more, one of them would write in his Gospel: “it was about four in the afternoon” – he wrote the time.

예수님께서 “나는 카페르나움 또는 나자렛에 산다.”라고 답하지 않으시고 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “와서 보아라.” (39절) 명함이 아니고 만남으로의 초대입니다. 두 사람은 따라가서 그 오후를 그분과 함께 지냈습니다. 그들이 예수님과 앉아 예수님께 질문하고 무엇보다도 경청했을 것이고 주님께서 말씀하실 때 그들의 가슴이 불타올랐을 것으로 상상하는 것은 어렵지 않습니다. 그들은 그들의 최대의 희망에 응답하는 말씀들의 아름다움을 감지합니다. 그리고 갑자기 저녁인데도 불구하고 그들의 가슴에는 하느님께서만 주실 수 있는 빛이 그들 안에서 폭발하는 것을 발견합니다. 우리의 주의를 끄는 한 가지는 60년 또는 그보다 더 후에 그중의 한 사람이 그의 복음서에 “때는 오후 네 시쯤이었다.”라고 쓴 것입니다. 그가 시간을 썼습니다.

And this is one thing that makes us think: every authentic encounter with Jesus remains alive in the memory, it is never forgotten. You forget many encounters, but a true encounter with Jesus remains forever. And many years later, those two even remembered the time, they had not forgotten that encounter that was so happy, so complete, that it changed their lives. Then, when they leave from that meeting and return to their brothers, that joy, that light overflows from their hearts like a raging river. One of the two, Andrew, says to his brother, Simon – whom Jesus will call Peter when He will meet him – “We have found the Messiah” (v. 41). They left sure that Jesus was the Messiah, certain.

우리를 생각에 잠기게 하는 내용입니다. 예수님과의 모든 진정한 만남은 기억에 남습니다. 절대로 잊지 않습니다. 여러분들은 많은 만남을 잊어버리지만 예수님과의 진정한 만남은 영원히 기억에 남습니다. 오랜 세월이 지난 후에 그 두 사람은 시간까지 기억했습니다. 그들은 그렇게 행복했고, 그렇게 완벽했고, 그들의 삶을 바꿨던 그 만남을 잊지 않았습니다. 그리고 그들이 그 만남을 뒤로하고 형제들에게 돌아갈 때 그 기쁨과 그 빛이 성난 강물처럼 그들의 가슴에 넘쳐흐릅니다. 그 둘 중에 한 명인 안드레아는 그의 형 시몬 - 후에 예수님께서 베드로라고 부르신 - 에게 “우리는 메시아를 만났소.” (41절) 라고 말합니다. 그들은 예수님께서 메시아시라는 확신을 가지고 그 자리를 떠났습니다.

Let us pause a moment on this experience of meeting Christ who calls us to remain with Him. Each one of God’s calls is an initiative of His love. He is the one who always takes the initiative. He calls you. God calls to life, He calls to faith, and He calls to a particular state in life: “I want you here”. God’s first call is to life, through which He makes us persons; it is an individual call because God does not make things in series. Then God calls us to faith and to become part of His family as children of God. Lastly, God calls us to a particular state in life: to give of ourselves on the path of matrimony, or that of the priesthood or the consecrated life. They are different ways of realizing God’s design that He has for each one of us that is always a design of love. But God calls always. And the greatest joy for every believer is to respond to that call, offering one’s entire being to the service of God and the brothers and sisters.

우리를 부르시어 그분과 함께 머무르라고 하시는 예수님과의 이 만남의 체험에 잠시 멈추어 봅시다. 하느님의 부르심은 각각이 그분 사랑의 계획입니다. 그분은 항상 기선을 잡으시는 분이십니다. 그분이 당신을 부르십니다. 하느님께서 생명으로 부르시고 신앙으로 부르시고 삶의 특정한 상태에로 부르십니다. “내가 여기에 너를 원한다.” 하느님의 첫 번째 부르심은 생명에로의 부르심입니다. 그 부르심을 통해 우리를 사람으로 만드십니다. 그것은 개인적인 부르심입니다. 하느님께서는 연속해서 만들지 않으시기 때문입니다. 그 다음에 하느님께서 우리를 신앙으로 부르셔서 우리가 하느님의 자녀로서 그분 가족의 일원이 되게 하십니다. 마지막으로 하느님께서 우리를 삶의 특정한 신분으로 부르셔서 우리에게 결혼의 여정에 들게 하시거나 사제의 길 또는 봉헌된 삶의 길에 들게 하십니다. 그것들은 우리 각자를 위해 하신, 항상 사랑의 설계인, 하느님의 설계를 실현하는 길입니다. 그러나 하느님께서 항상 부르십니다. 그리고 모든 신자들의 가장 큰 기쁨은 그 부르심에 응답하여 온 존재를 하느님과 형제자매들에게 봉사하는 것입니다.

Brothers and sisters, before the Lord’s call, which reaches us in a thousand ways – through others, happy or sad events – our attitude at times might be rejection. No… “I am afraid”… Rejection because it seems to be in contrast to our aspirations; and even fear because we believe it is too demanding and uncomfortable: “Oh no, I will never be able to do it, better not to, a calmer life is better… God over there, me here”. But God’s call is always love: we need to try to discover the love behind each call, and it should be responded to only with love. This is the language: the response to a call that comes out of love, only love. At the beginning there is an encounter, or rather, there is the encounter with Jesus who speaks to us of His Father, He makes His love known to us. And then the spontaneous desire will arise even in us to communicate it to the people that we love: “I met Love”, “I met the Messiah”, “I met Jesus”, “I found the meaning of my life”. In a word: “I found God”.

형제자매 여러분, 수많은 방법으로 우리에게 도달하는 - 다른 사람들을 통해서, 행복 또는 불행한 사건을 통해서 - 주님의 부르심 앞에서 우리의 태도는 때로는 거부적일 때가 있습니다. 안 돼요....“두려워요.”... 우리의 열망에 반대되는 것 같아서 거부합니다. 너무 일이 많고 불편하다고 믿기 때문에 두렵기까지 합니다. “안 됩니다. 나는 절대로 그것을 할 수 없습니다. 안  하는 게 낫습니다. 조용히 사는 것이 낫습니다. 하느님께서는 거기에 계시고 나는 여기에 있겠습니다.” 그러나 하느님의 부르심은 항상 사랑입니다. 우리는 각각의 부르심 뒤에 있는 사랑을 발견할 필요가 있습니다. 그리고 그 부르심에 오직 사랑으로 응답해야 합니다. 이것이 언어입니다. 사랑에서 나온 부르심의 응답은 오직 사랑입니다. 맨 처음에 만남이 있습니다. 우리에게 자신의 아버지에 대해 말씀하시는 예수님과의 만남이 있습니다. 그분은 그분의 사랑을 우리에게 알려주십니다. 그리고 곧 순간적으로 그것을 우리가 사랑하는 다른 사람들에게 알려야 한다는 열망이 우리에게 일어납니다. “나는 사랑을 만났습니다.” “나는 메시아를 만났습니다.” “내가 예수님을 만났습니다.” “나는 내 삶의 의미를 발견했습니다.” 한 마디로 “나는 하느님을 발견했습니다.”

May the Virgin Mary help us make of our lives a hymn of praise to God in response to His call and in the humble and joyful fulfillment of His will.

동정 마리아여 저희를 도우셔서, 그분의 부르심에 대한 응답으로 그리고 그분의 뜻의 겸손하고 기쁨에 찬 실현으로서, 저희의 삶이 하느님께 대한 찬미의 노래가 되게 하소서.

But let us remember this: there was a moment for each one of us, in his or her life, in which God made Himself present more strongly, with a call. Let us remember that. Let us go back to that moment so that the memory of that moment might always renew that encounter with Jesus for us.

그러나 이것을 기억합시다. 우리 각자가 각자의 삶에서 하느님께서 더 뚜렷하게 나타나셔서 부르신 순간이 있었습니다. 그것을 기억합시다. 그 순간으로 돌아가서 그 때의 기억이 항상 우리의 예수님과의 만남을 새롭게 하도록 합시다.
