Pope's Address Before the Angelus (November 8, 2020)

Dear brothers and sisters, good afternoon! This Sunday’s Gospel passage (Mt 25:1-13) invites us to prolong the reflection on eternal life that we began on the occasion of the Feast of All Saints and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed. Jesus recounts the parable of the ten virgins invited to a wedding feast, symbol of the Kingdom of heaven.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분 안녕하십니까? 이번 주일의 복음은 (마태오 25,1-13) 모든 성인의 축일과 세상을 떠난 모든 신자들을 기억하는 위령의 날을 기하여 시작한 영원한 생명에 대한 묵상을 계속하도록 초대합니다. 예수님께서 하늘나라의 상징인 혼인잔치에 초대된 10 처녀의 예화를 말씀하십니다. 

In Jesus’ time, it was customary for weddings to be celebrated at night; so the procession of guests took place with lit lamps. Some bridesmaids are foolish: they take their lamps but do not take oil with them; instead, the wise ones take the oil with them together with their lamps. The bridegroom is late, late in coming, and they all fall asleep. When a voice alerts them that the bridegroom is about to arrive, the foolish ones, at that moment, realize that they do not have oil for their lamps; they ask the wise ones for some, but they reply that they cannot give any oil because there would not be enough for them all. While the foolish virgins go to buy oil, the bridegroom arrives. The wise virgins enter the banquet hall with him, and the door is closed. The others arrive too late and are turned away.

예수님 시대에 혼인잔치가 밤에 거행되는 것이 관습이었습니다. 그래서 손님들의 행렬이 등불과 함께 진행되었습니다. 어떤 신부들러리들은 어리석습니다. 그들은 등을 가져오지만 기름을 가져 오지 않습니다. 대신에 슬기로운 이들은 등과 함께 기름도 가지고 옵니다. 신랑이 늦습니다. 늦게 옵니다. 그래서 모두 잠이 듭니다. 신랑이 곧 도착한다는 소리에 어리석은 이들은 그 순간 등에 쓸 기름이 없다는 것을 알아차리고 슬기로운 이들에게 기름을 청합니다. 그러나 그들은 모두에게 충분하지 않기 때문에 줄 수 없다고 답합니다. 어리석은 처녀들이 기름을 사러가는 동안 신랑이 도착합니다. 슬기로운 처녀들은 그와 함께 연회장에 들어가고 문이 닫힙니다. 다른 이들은 너무 늦게 도착하여 되돌아갑니다.

It is clear that with this parable, Jesus wants to tell us that we must be prepared for His coming. Not only the final coming but also for the everyday encounters, great and small, with a view to that encounter, for which the lamp of faith is not enough; we also need the oil of charity and good works. As the apostle Paul says, the faith that truly unites us to Jesus is, “faith working through love” (Gal 5:6). It is what is represented by the behavior of the wise virgins. Being wise and prudent means not waiting until the last moment to correspond to God’s grace, but to do so actively and immediately, starting right now. “I… yes, I will convert soon”… “Convert today! Change your life today!” “Yes, yes, tomorrow”. And the same thing is said tomorrow, and so it never arrives. Today! If we want to be ready for the final encounter with the Lord, we must cooperate with Him now and perform good deeds inspired by His love.

이 예화를 통해 예수님께서 우리에게 그분의 재림을 준비해야한다고 말씀하시고 싶어 하시는 것이 분명합니다. 마지막의 오심뿐만 아니라 크고 작은 일상의 만남에 대해. 그 만남의 관점에서 믿음의 등이 충분하지 않습니다. 우리도 사랑과 선행의 기름이 필요합니다. 사도 바오로가 말하듯이 우리를 진정으로 예수님과 결합시키는 믿음은 “사랑을 통해 활동하는 믿음” (갈라디아 5,6)입니다. 그것은 슬기로운 처녀들의 행위로 나타나는 것입니다. 슬기롭고 신중하다는 것은 하느님의 은총에 보답하기 위해서 마지막 순간까지 기다리지 않고 바로 지금 시작하여 적극적으로 즉각적으로 행하는 것입니다. “제가.... 예, 곧 회개하겠습니다.” ... “오늘 회개하십시오! 당신의 삶을 오늘 바꾸십시오!” “예, 예, 내일 하겠습니다.” 그리고 내일 똑같은 말을 합니다. 그래서 절대로 도달하지 못합니다. 오늘! 우리가 주님과의 마지막 만남을 준비하고 싶으면 우리는 지금 그분과 협력해야 하며 그분의 사랑으로 감도된 선행을 행해야 합니다.

We know that it happens that, unfortunately, we forget the purpose of our life, that is, the definitive appointment with God, thus losing the sense of expectation and making the present absolute. When one makes the present absolute, he or she looks only to the present, losing the sense of expectation, which is so good, and so necessary, and also pulls us away from the contradictions of the moment. This attitude – when one loses the sense of expectation – precludes any view of the hereafter: people do everything as if they will never depart for the other life. And so people care only about possessing, of going about, establishing themselves…

불행하게도 우리가 우리의 삶의 목표 즉 하느님과의 결정적인 약속을 잊어버리는 일이 일어나는 것을 우리는 압니다. 그래서 기대감을 잃고 현재를 절대적인 것으로 만듭니다. 현재를 절대적인 것으로 만들 때 그는 현재만 바라보고, 그렇게 좋고 그렇게 필요한 기대감을 잃고, 순간의 모순들에서 멀어집니다. 이러한 태도 - 기대감을 잃을 때 - 앞으로 올 삶에 대한 관점을 배제하고, 사람들은 마치 다른 삶을 향해 절대로 떠나지 않을 것처럼 모든 것을 합니다. 그래서 사람들은 소유하고, 바삐 돌아가고, 자신을 확립하는 데에만 관심을 둡니다.

And more and more. If we allow ourselves to be guided by what seems most attractive to us, of what we like, by the search for our interests, our life becomes sterile; we do not accumulate any reserve of oil for our lamp, and it will be extinguished before the Lord’s coming. We must live today, but today that goes towards tomorrow, towards that coming, a present full of hope. If, on the other hand, we are vigilant and correspond to God’s grace by doing good, we can serenely await the bridegroom’s coming. The Lord will be able to come even while we are sleeping: this will not worry us, because we have the reserve of oil accumulated through our daily good works, accumulated with that expectation of the Lord, that He may come as soon as possible and that He may come to take us with Him.

그리고 점점, 만약에 우리가 우리 자신을 우리에게 가장 매력적인 것에 의해, 우리가 좋아하는 것에 의해, 우리의 이익의 추구에 의해 움직이도록 맡겨두면, 우리의 삶은 매 말라집니다. 우리는 우리의 등에 쓸 기름을 비축하지 않아서 주님이 오실 때 우리의 등은 꺼질 것입니다.  우리는 오늘을 살아야 합니다. 그러나 오늘은 내일로 이어집니다. 희망으로 가득한 선물인 그 만남으로 이어집니다. 만약에 반대로 우리가 깨어서 선행을 함으로써 하느님의 은총에 부응하면, 우리는 조용히 신랑이 오기를 기다릴 수 있습니다. 주님께서는 우리가 자고 있는 동안에도 오실 수 있습니다. 그래도 우리는 걱정할 필요가 없습니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 일상의 선행을 통해서 비축한 기름, 주님께 대한 기대감, 그분께서 가능한 빨리 오실 것이라는 기대감, 그분께서 우리를 데리러 오실 것이라는 기대감으로 비축한 기름이 있기 때문입니다.

Let us invoke the intercession of Mary Most Holy, that she may help us to live an active faith, as she did: it is the shining lamp with which we can pass through the night beyond death and reach the great feast of life.

지극히 거룩하신 마리아의 중재를 청하여 그분께서 우리를 도우셔서 그분이 하셨던 대로 우리가 적극적인 믿음을 실천하게 하소서. 그것은 길을 밝혀서 우리가 죽음 너머의 밤을 통과하여 생명의 위대한 축제에 도달할 수 있도록 하는 빛나는 등입니다.
