Pope's Address Before the Angelus (November 1, 2020)

Dear brothers and sisters, good morning! On this solemn Feast of All Saints, the Church invites us to reflect on the great hope, the great hope that is based on Christ’s resurrection: Christ is risen and we will also be with Him, we will be with Him. The Saints and Blesseds are the most authoritative witnesses of Christian hope, because they lived it fully in their lives, amidst joys and sufferings, putting into practice the Beatitudes that Jesus preached and which resound in the Liturgy (see Mt 5:1-12a). The evangelical Beatitudes, in fact, are the path to holiness. I will reflect now on two Beatitudes, the second and the third.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분 안녕하십니까? 오늘 모든 성인대축일에 교회는 우리에게 그리스도의 부활에 기초한 대 희망에 대해 묵상하도록 초대합니다. 그리스도께서 부활하시고 우리도 그분과 함께 할 것입니다. 우리가 그분과 함께 할 것입니다. 성인들과 복자들은 그리스도인들의 대희망의 가장 권위 있는 증거자들입니다. 그들은 그들의 삶에서 기쁨과 고통 안에서 예수님께서 설교하셨고 전례 안에서 울려 퍼지는 (마태오 5,1-12 ㄱ 참조) 참 행복을 실천하며 그리스도인의 대 희망을 온전히 살았기 때문입니다. 복음적 참 행복은 사실 거룩함으로 가는 길입니다. 저는 오늘 두 참 행복 즉 두 번째와 세 번째를 묵상하겠습니다.

The second one is this: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (v. 4). These words seem contradictory because mourning is not a sign of joy and happiness. Reasons for mourning come from suffering and death, illness, moral adversity, sin, and mistakes: simply from everyday life marked by fragility, weakness, and difficulties, a life at times wounded and pained by ingratitude and misunderstanding. Jesus proclaims blessed those who mourn over this reality, who trust in the Lord despite everything and put themselves under His shadow. They are not indifferent, nor do they harden their hearts when they are in pain, but they patiently hope for God’s comfort. And they experience this comfort even in this life.

두 번째 참 행복은 이것입니다. “행복하여라, 슬퍼하는 사람들! 그들은 위로를 받을 것이다.” (4절) 슬퍼하는 것은 기쁨과 행복의 표시가 아니므로 이 말씀은 상충되는 것 같습니다. 슬퍼하는 이유는 고통과 죽음, 병, 도덕적 역경, 죄, 그리고 실수입니다. 단지 허술하고 약하고 어려움으로 점철된 매일의 삶에서 옵니다. 배은망덕과 불이해로인해 종종 상처받고 고통 받는 삶으로부터 옵니다. 예수님께서 이 현실을 슬퍼하는 사람들, 모든 것에도 불구하고 주님을 믿고 주님의 그늘 아래 자신을 맡기는 사람들을 복되다고 선언하십니다. 그들은 고통을 당할 때 무관심하거나 그들의 마음을 단단하게 하지 않고 하느님의 위안을 끈기 있게 희망합니다. 그리고 그들은 이 삶에서도 이 위안을 경험합니다.

In the third Beatitude, Jesus states: “Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth” (v. 5). Brothers and sisters, meekness! Meekness is characteristic of Jesus, who said of Himself: “Learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart” (Mt 11:29). The meek are those who know how to control themselves, who leave space for the other, they listen to the other, respect the other’s way of living, his or her needs, and requests. They do not intend to overwhelm or diminish the other, they do not want to be on top of or dominate everything, nor do they impose their ideas or their own interests to the detriment of others.

예수님께서 말씀하시는 세 번째 참 행복은 “행복하여라, 온유한 사람들! 그들은 땅을 차지할 것이다.” (5절) 형제자매 여러분, 온유입니다. 온유함은 예수님의 성격입니다. 예수님께서 자신에 대해 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. “나는 마음이 온유하고 겸손하니 나에게 배워라.” (마태오 11,29) 온유한 사람들은 자신을 어떻게 다스리는가를 알고, 타인을 위한 공간을 남겨두고, 타인에게 귀 기울이고, 그들의 삶의 방식, 그들의 필요와 그들의 요청을 경청하는 사람들입니다. 그들은 타인을 압도하거나 폄하하지 않고 모든 것 위에 있거나 지배하려고 하지 않고 자신들의 생각이나 자신들의 이익을 주장하여 다른 사람들에게 해를 입히지 않습니다.     

These people, not appreciated by the world and its mentality, are, instead, precious in God’s eyes. God gives them the promised land as an inheritance, that is, life eternal. This beatitude also begins here below and is fulfilled in Christ. But meekness… At this moment in life, even in the world, there is so much aggressivity, in everyday life as well, the first thing that comes out of us is aggression, defensiveness. We need meekness to progress on the path of holiness. To listen, to respect, not to attack: meekness.

세상과 세상의 사고방식은 이 사람들을 인장하지 않지만 이 사람들은 하느님께서 보시기에는 귀중합니다. 하느님께서 그들에게 상속으로 약속된 땅을 즉 영원한 생명을 주십니다. 이 참 행복은 또한 여기 아래에서 시작하여 그리스도 안에서 충족됩니다. 그러나 온유함은.... 삶의 이 순간에, 세상에는, 매일의 삶에 또한 매우 심한 공격성이 있습니다. 우리에게서 나오는 첫 번째가 공격, 방어입니다. 성화의 길에 나아가기 위해서 우리는 온유함이 필요합니다. 경청하고 존중하고, 공격하지 맙시다. 그것이 온유입니다. 

Dear brothers and sisters, choosing purity, meekness, and mercy; choosing to entrust oneself to the Lord in poverty of spirit and in affliction; dedicating oneself to justice and peace – all this means going against the current in respect to this world’s mentality, in respect to the culture of possessing, of meaningless fun, of arrogance against the weakest. This evangelical path was trodden by the Saints and Blesseds.

친애하는 형제자매 여러분, 순수함, 온유함, 그리고 자비를 선택하는 것은 영혼의 가난함과 역경 속에서 주님께 자신을 맡기는 것을 선택하는 것입니다. 자신을 정의와 평화에 헌신하는 것 - 이 모든 것은 현재의 이 세상의 사고방식과, 소유의 문화와, 의미 없는 즐거움, 약자 앞에서의 거만함의 반대로 가는 것을 의미합니다. 이 복음의 길은 성인들과 복자들이 걸어간 길입니다.

Today’s solemnity that honors All Saints reminds us of the personal and universal vocation to holiness and proposes sure models for this journey that each person walks in a unique way, an unrepeatable way. It is enough to think of the inexhaustible variety of gifts and real-life stories there are among the saints: they are not equal, each one has their own personality and developed their own life of holiness according to their own personality, and each one of us can do it, taking this path: meekness, meekness, please, and we will head toward holiness.

모든 성인을 섬기는 오늘의 대축일은 우리에게 거룩함에 대한 개인적 공적 소명을 환기시키고 우리 각자가 독특한 방법으로 그리고 반복될 수 없는 방법으로 걸어가는 이 여정의 확실한 모델을 제시합니다. 성인들 가운데에 있는 무궁무진하게 다양한 선물과 생생한 삶의 이야기들을 생각하는 것으로 충분합니다. 그들은 서로 같지 않습니다. 각 성인은 그들 자신들의 성격을 가지고 있고 그들 성격에 맞는 자신만의 성화의 길을 개발하였고 우리 각자도 이 길을 택하여 그렇게 할 수 있습니다. 온유함, 온유함입니다. 우리는 성화를 향할 것입니다.

This immense family of faithful disciples of Christ has a Mother, the Virgin Mary. We venerate her under the title Queen of All Saints, but she is first of all the Mother who teaches everyone how to welcome and follow her children. May she help us nourish the desire for holiness, walking the way of the Beatitudes.

그리스도의 충실한 제자들의 이 거대한 가족은 동정 마리아 어머니를 모시고 계십니다. 우리는 모든 성인의 여왕이라는 타이틀을 가지신 그분을 공경합니다만 그분은 우선 모든 사람들에게 어떻게 그분의 자녀들을 환영하고 따를 것인가를 가르치십니다. 성모님께서 저희를 도우셔서 저희가 성화에 대한 열망을 키우고 참 행복의 길을 걷도록 하여주소서.
